Quick answer
The letter H bingo pattern is the full B column and the full O column joined by the middle row. It covers 13 squares, and because the crossbar runs through the free space you need 12 numbers. One card has a 5.4% chance by call 60, and with 500 cards in play the first H usually comes around call 48.
Which squares make the letter H?
The H is two tall posts and a crossbar:
- Left post: the whole B column, numbers 1–15
- Right post: the whole O column, numbers 61–75
- Crossbar: I3, free space, G3 across the middle row
13 squares, 12 numbers. The N column contributes nothing except the free space, so calls from 31 to 45 can’t help.
Letter H odds by call
Exact single-card figures:
| Calls made | Chance one card has the H |
|---|---|
| 40 | 0.02% |
| 50 | 0.46% |
| 60 | 5.4% |
| 70 | 41% |
Half of single cards finish by call 72. With more cards in the room, our simulation puts the first H at about call 56 with 50 cards and call 48 with 500 cards.
In a crazy H game the sideways version also counts, and the sideways H is exactly the letter I. That doubles the ways to win, lifting one card’s chance at call 60 to 10% and bringing the first winner in a 500-card room to about call 44.
Tips for players
- It’s mostly B and O. Ten of your 12 numbers come from the two outer columns.
- The crossbar is short. Once the posts are done, you only need two more numbers: I3 and G3.
- Ignore N calls. The only N square in the H is the free space.
Tips for callers and hosts
The H is a medium-length letter that’s easy to see on any card, which makes it a solid choice for senior centers and mixed groups. At 12 numbers it fits the middle of a session with a mid-sized prize.
Halls that spell names or words with letter games (for a birthday, a team or a holiday) will find the H turns up often, as in HAPPY, HOLIDAY and HALLOWEEN.
Variations
- Crazy H: the H or the sideways H, which is the letter I.
- Posts only: the B and O columns without the crossbar, a 10-number version of railroad tracks using the outer columns.
- Plus sign: the crossbar with a full N column instead of posts. See the plus sign.
Frequently asked questions
How many numbers do you need for a letter H?
Twelve: five each from the B and O columns plus the I and G squares in the middle row. The middle of the crossbar is the free space.
Does the letter H use the free space?
Yes. The crossbar is the middle row, which passes through the free space at the center of the card.
What is the letter H turned sideways?
Turned a quarter turn, the H becomes the letter I: full top and bottom rows joined by the N column. In a crazy H game, both count.
