Letter L Bingo Pattern: Rules, Odds & Tips

Quick answer

The letter L bingo pattern is the full B column plus the full bottom row, meeting in the bottom-left corner. It covers 9 squares and needs 9 numbers, with no help from the free space. It's one of the shorter letters: one card has a 12% chance by call 60, and with 500 cards in play the first L usually comes around call 41.

Difficulty: medium9 squares to coverAlso called: L Pattern, Capital L, Regular L

Which squares make the letter L?

Two lines along the edges of the card, meeting at the bottom left:

  • Upright: the whole B column (B1–B5), all numbers from 1 to 15
  • Base: I5, N5, G5, O5 along the bottom row

That’s 9 squares and 9 numbers. Five come from the B column and one each from I, N, G and O. The free space is nowhere near the L.

Letter L odds by call

Exact single-card figures:

Calls made Chance one card has the L
40 0.22%
50 2.0%
60 12%
70 52%

Half of single cards finish by call 70. In a room, our simulation puts the first L at about call 50 with 50 cards and call 41 with 500 cards.

If your hall plays the crazy L, where the L can sit in any corner, everything speeds up: the chance at call 60 jumps to 33%, and the first winner in a 500-card room comes around call 35.

It’s also worth knowing that the L is half of the outside edge. Add the top row and the O column and you have the full frame, which needs 16 numbers.

Tips for players

  • B calls are gold. More than half the L is in the B column.
  • Only the bottom row counts from I to O. An I, N, G or O number anywhere except row 5 doesn’t help.
  • Confirm “regular” or “crazy” before the game. It changes which corners count.

Tips for callers and hosts

The L is one of the simplest letters to explain, which makes it handy for teaching patterns to new players, kids or a senior group trying shapes for the first time. At 9 numbers it’s a medium game: longer than a line, shorter than most letters.

For a quick follow-up, continue the same card from the L to the letter C (add the top row and you only need four more numbers), or switch to the crazy version for the next game.

Variations

  • Crazy L: any of the four corners. See the crazy L.
  • Letter C: the L plus the top row, 13 numbers. See the letter C.

Frequently asked questions

What squares make an L in bingo?

The five squares of the B column and the five squares of the bottom row. They share the bottom-left corner, so that's 9 squares in total.

Does the free space count in a letter L?

No. The L runs along the left and bottom edges of the card, and the free space is in the center.

What's the difference between letter L and crazy L?

A letter L has to face the normal way, in the bottom-left corner. A crazy L can be in any of the four corners, which gives four ways to win and a much quicker game.
