Letter Y Bingo Pattern: Rules, Odds & Tips

Quick answer

The letter Y bingo pattern has two arms running from the top corners down to the free space and a stem continuing down the N column to the bottom. It covers 7 squares but needs only 6 numbers, the fewest of any letter. One card has a 7.9% chance by call 50, and with 500 cards in play the first Y usually comes around call 27; a crazy Y comes about five calls sooner.

Difficulty: easy7 squares to coverAlso called: Y Pattern, Crazy Y

Which squares make the letter Y?

Two arms that meet in the center, then a stem straight down:

  • Left arm: B1, I2
  • Right arm: O1, G2
  • Center: free space
  • Stem: N4, N5

7 squares, 6 numbers. The Y is the top half of the letter X plus the bottom of the N column, which is why it’s so much shorter than most letter games.

Letter Y odds by call

Exact single-card figures:

Calls made Regular Y Crazy Y (4 directions)
30 0.29% 1.2%
40 1.9% 7.2%
50 7.9% 26%
60 25% 63%

A single card finishes a regular Y by call 68 half the time and a crazy Y by call 57. In a room, our simulation puts the first regular Y around call 39 with 50 cards and call 27 with 500 cards; for a crazy Y it’s about call 31 and call 22.

Tips for players

  • Six numbers, four columns. You need one number each from B, I, G and O, plus two from N (31–45).
  • Watch N4 and N5. The stem is the part of the Y people forget, because it sits below the free space.
  • In a crazy Y, start from the center. Every version passes through the free space, so the squares around it are the busiest.

Tips for callers and hosts

The Y is a good choice when you want a letter game that doesn’t drag. At 6 numbers it’s the quickest letter on most pattern boards, a little longer than a six pack in a busy room, so it suits an early-session slot or a small prize. It’s also friendly for children and new players.

The Y looks a lot like a wishbone, which makes it a fun pick for a Thanksgiving game. Show the shape on the board so players know the stem runs all the way to the bottom row.

Variations

  • Crazy Y: arms pointing to any edge.
  • Letter X: add the bottom half of the X instead of the stem. See the letter X.
  • Letter T: a straight top bar instead of arms. See the letter T.
