Quick answer
Road trip bingo, also called car bingo, is a spotting game. Each passenger gets a card filled with things you might see from the car, like a cow, a school bus, a bridge or a license plate from another state. Players mark squares as they spot each item out the window. The first to complete a row, column or diagonal wins. No caller is needed.

“Are we there yet?” usually starts somewhere around hour two. Road trip bingo is the classic answer. It gets kids looking out the window instead of at a screen, it works with any route from interstates to back roads, and it doesn’t need batteries or Wi-Fi. A different card for every kid also means fewer fights over who saw the cow first.
How do you play road trip bingo?
Passengers spot things out the window and mark them on their cards.
- Print one card per passenger from the generator at the top of this page.
- Give each player a clipboard and a crayon, or a sheet protector and a dry-erase marker.
- When a player sees something on their card (a red car, a water tower, a tractor), they call it out and mark it.
- The first player to complete a row, column or diagonal shouts “Bingo!”
- Keep playing for four corners, then a full card, to stretch the game across a long drive.
The center square is free. There’s no caller; the road does the calling.
How many road trip bingo cards should I print?
Print at least three cards per kid for a long trip: one for the drive there, one for the way home and a spare for a fresh start after a rest stop. For a family of four kids on a two-day drive, 15 to 20 cards is about right. Every card from the generator is different, so kids aren’t all hunting for the same thing.
Road trip bingo rules that prevent fights
- Call it to claim it? Decide up front. Either each player can mark any item they personally see, or only the first to call it out can mark it. The first option is gentler for little kids.
- Driver is the judge. Or the front-seat passenger. Their ruling is final.
- One item, one square. A single red car can’t count for “Red Car” and “Convertible” unless it’s a red convertible.
- Out-of-state plates. Any plate that isn’t from your home state counts.
Variations for longer trips
- License plate add-on. Keep a separate list of every state plate you spot. On a cross-country trip, can you get all 50? Our states and capitals bingo is a fun companion.
- Regional cards. Driving through farm country? Mountains? Use the custom bingo card generator to make cards with local sights: cactus, cornfield, palm tree, ferry.
- Alphabet challenge. Between rounds, find letters A to Z on signs in order.
- Blackout marathon. Start a blackout card at the beginning of the day; the winner picks the next meal stop.
Tips for parents
- Pre-readers. Add a quick doodle next to each square before you leave so younger kids can recognize items.
- Motion sickness. Looking out the window often helps, but kids who get carsick may prefer a partner who reads the card aloud.
- Keep prizes in the glovebox. Small treats or “choose the music” privileges keep winners happy.
Prize ideas
Car-friendly prizes: a snack from the gas station, choosing the next playlist, a sticker book, a small toy car, control of the window for 10 minutes, or picking the restaurant at the next stop. More ideas are in our bingo prize ideas guide.

Frequently asked questions
What age is road trip bingo good for?
Ages 4 and up. Pre-readers can play with a grown-up reading squares to them, while older kids can play independently and keep track themselves.
How do you stop arguments in car bingo?
Set a rule that the first person to call out an item gets to mark it, and that the driver or front-seat adult is the judge for disputes.
How do you keep road trip bingo cards from getting lost?
Clip each card to a clipboard, or slide it into a sheet protector and use a dry-erase marker so it can be wiped clean and reused on the way home.
Can the driver play road trip bingo?
The driver should keep their eyes on the road. They can be the judge or caller, but shouldn't hold a card.
